3 Sketches For String Quartet
As part of my compositional routine I write at least one miniature everyday. 3 Sketches for String Quartet is part of a larger collection of string quartet miniatures. These 3 sketches specifically I wrote later on in the cycle, and as a result are more difficult in nature. Movement 1 is a straight ahead technical piece really meant to allow a musician to express aggressiveness. To reflect the raw nature of Movement 1, movement 2 follows a more controlled aggressive style. There are many rhythmic challenges such as hockets, and nonaligned syncopations amongst all of the players. I chose to let the 3rd movement to be the slow and last movement. Rather than serving as a period, I want this piece to serve as a great opening to any program. After building in hope and optimism half through the movement, everything comes crashing down. The piece has its last dying breaths, and what happens from here I will leave up to the performer.
