Brass Quintet No. 1 was written for the members of my personal brass quintet, Sin City Brass, and as one of my first entries to the brass repertoire I took steady time in creating a unique piece. Prior to this piece, our brass quintet divulged from the middle era of classical music and focused more towards Baroque Arrangements and Contemporary Works (with no in between). The use of raw power, taildoving, hockets, and rhythmic precision was one of the most powerful tools that I quickly realized as I played Brass Quintet works. This piece is a very clear homage to the new works and arrangements that our genre has seen within the past few years.
The piece is split into three movements, and within each movement is are unique rhythmic motif(s) that reoccur in different transfigurations. The color of sets and the octatonic scale were the main driver behind each note choice, and a agile double tongue is most definitely needed to perform the many runs. The second movement features a twist on the Star Spangled Banner melody in addition to diffusing the octatonic sound with more tonal harmonies. I highly recommend flugelhorns for this movement to help contrast the previous movement and blend the sounds of the ensemble into a nice unit of musc. The third movement is the most challenging and rhythmically intricate. In addition to further use of the past motifs, I introduce new themes that lay over everything creating a medley of the all the aforementioned material. This piece is a true test of individual responsibility, metronomic pulse, communication, and chamber skills.
